The Concept of Self: individuality and integrity
19 January – 3 February 2019
The Concept of Self is a continuous effort at exploring the idea of self by the young artists from Indonesia and Thailand. The first series was held in Subhashok the Arts Centre Bangkok (S.A.C.) in 2017 under the title The Concept of Self: on power, identity and labels. The Bangkok exhibition examined how society becomes an influential force for constructing the concept of “self” that is reflected in the contemporary lives of Asia. Using microsociology and macrosociology theories, the exhibition analyzed the processes through which societies as a whole and groups inside them deal with the challenges associated with membership and interaction within a culture.
Emphasizing its conceptual essence from the first series, the current Jakarta exhibition further looks into the influence of Indonesian and Thai political and cultural shift in the 1990s, particularly, how it has affected each artist in developing their individual artistic self and artistic integrity as a member of society. Through the myriads of artistic methods and approaches, this follow-up exhibition, The Concept of Self: individuality and integrity will demonstrate how the artists enhance their own creative vision and artistic value as a response to the society.
