Art Talk #2– Curatorial and Arts Management
The second series discusses about curatorial and arts management associated with social and public engagement. Modern society has come to understand the urgency of art appreciation. But this urge is not supported by an understanding of the essence of art creation, from idea generation to public display. With such considerations, the process of curatorial and arts management have become significantly important in bridging between art and the public. This Art Talk invites three art professionals known as curators and art managers who will speak about how an outreach program in a non-profit organization in New York becomes a path to communicating art with the public, the process and strategy of curating young and emerging artist exhibitions and establishing their market value, and also about the spirit of collaboration between artists through the approach of dynamic art programs.

Maju Terus Pantang Mundur: Kisah-kisah tentang manajemen lembaga seni rupa nirlaba
Onward Never Retreat: Stories of Management of Nonprofit Arts Organizations
We always dream of a country with complete and adequate infrastructure and supporting facilities for artistic activities (read: art). If that is achieved, with the tools provided by the state and the community to support the entire art network and ecosystem, would the question of continuity and sustainability be solved? The results of research in New York show that there must be a special effort made to connect the community to the world of art with art institutions continuing to get support from the community.

Young Artists and the Emerging Market
Between 2005 and 2008 the Indonesian art market flourished with new upcoming talents easily able to enter the art arena and start their careers as artists. However after the art market bubble burst in 2008, it became difficult for the young talents to survive this era while at the same time they face stepped up competition from an increasing talent pool. Pragmatically speaking this situation is influenced by the decreasing audience enthusiasm towards their artwork, therefore lower levels of interest towards their creations. In the meantime, an increase in appreciation towards Indonesian art flourished within the rising middle class society. Hence, with these opportunities and possibilities how will these young artists respond to this situation? How then could we expand the concept of the ‘art arena’? With samples of exhibitions and artworks of young, Bandung-based Indonesian artists, this presentation would like to share some perspective on finding possibilities of mediation for the young artists who started their careers post 2008.

Contribution to the Tradition of Collaboration in Artistic Relations that is Fluid and Dynamic.
Over the span of ten years and at present, ruangrupa art projects have included many arts activities/projects that were designed in various forms of collaborative work that have looked at the subject of the city as the foundation to their work.
Guidelines to perceive the subject of the city were then used for reading, deciphering and engaging the many city phenomena, which are directly related to social issues, economics, politics and culture within all the elements that form the city.
Based on the fact that the arts can no longer act passively or isolate themselves from many discourses in the community, ruangrupa is involved in a form of collaboration with a number of other disciplines in order to find a formula that can take on and explain the potential of sophisticated products in contemporary art development and knowledge.
